If it is not permanently mounted, I don't believe there is a "best"way as
your library/database will be inconsistant, ie: files will be missing when
the external drive is not mounted and/or may appear in a different
location.

If you can assure that the external drive is in the same location and
store your library and config files there also, you would be able to use
the external drive on multiple boxes.
