I have been using external drives for a number of apps, darktable,
lightworks, etc. 

First I use gparted to format the drive and give it a label
eg photos. then In darktable I would import the files
from /media/myhome/photos/. This way I do not have to work where the
drive is mounted in, just that it it is mounted.
