I think for the peace of one's mind and the safety of valuable photos it 
might be best to have the raw/jpg originals always at the same location 
from where they accessed by darktable. Darktable doesn't change the 
originals and that way its database stays up-to-date.

There is a saying related to any storage system. It is not the question 
whether it fails, the question is when?

For backup-purposes I use three different USB-dives alternatively  and 
have that way always different backups generations.
With tools like rsync only changed files are very quickly backed up.
