On the subject of thumbnails, though, am I right in thinking darktable uses the embedded JPEG thumbnail when the file has not been edited in darktable but then runs the processing pipeline and caches the result once it has been modified? On a similar note it seems to me pictures produced by the 'z' key are a bit soft compared so pictures exported and indeed the same picture in the darkroom view. Is there some cheat going on there to produce the picture in a reasonable amount of time?
