In any case, it appears that elevation data can indeed be extracted from 
on-line maps.  Both google and Microsoft provide relevant APIs:

This is all gobbley-gook to me but, perhaps to you Illustrious Programmers out 
there, the above may provide some clues as to how Dt might someday also be able 
to provide elevation data via the Maps function.
