Quite a bit, but still a fraction of what your RAW files would take. So,
if you have disk space issues, you should take less pictures or stop
shooting RAW ;-).

Indeed, you can skip it from your backups. At worse,
darktable-generate-cache, go take a cup of coffee, and your thumbnails
will be back.
