can you check your darktablerc for something similar to:

never_use_embedded_thumb=true
plugins/lighttable/low_quality_thumbnails=false

?

the size 4k is not a good idea if you don't need the thumbnails this large.

and yes, you need to recreate your cache (delete ~/.cache/darktable/
or wherever that is for you), and maybe you want to recreate them all
at once from the command line (man darktable-generate-cache).
