Could (as you wrote earlier) be Sentry or Impala that makes the difference, but as far as I know Sentry just check roles on existing connections, and Impala is not used unless you use the Impala port (and the usage shouldn't be different at all even if you do), so none of them should affect how a basic Hive connection works, as long as your user has the necessary roles. Are you using encryption, SASL, Kerberos or LDAP in your Hive setup?
