This seems to work now:

DataMapper.setup(:mem, :adapter => :in_memory)
class Employer
   include DataMapper::Resource

   def self.default_repository_name
     :mem
   end

   property :id, Serial
   property :name, String
   validates_present :name
end


Employer.new
