Messageah-hah Sorted :-)

Nothing wrong with my config - Third field in Entry panel is a Variable length
text field, which I suspect one of our "wonderful" users had been in and left
something sitting on the enter key and entered one hell of a lot of returns.
Noticed that on importing translog into database that the entry panel was not
fully populating - about 500 records were missing spread thru out. but this one
record was only getting the 1st two fields populated. Found this down arrow
sitting on the end of what should have been an empty text field. Holding down
the delete key for many minutes would not get rid of the down arrow. Looking at
that record in the Translog file showed that the field number was missing and
it had 33 x "CR" returns, (I was expecting a heap more), but after editing in
the field number and editing out the returns before importing the transaction
log file, the Big clean completed fine. Maybe I simply didn't "wait" long
enough as per the please wait message but I'd let it run for 15-20 mins b4
pulling the pin. Interestingly doing an export and import of the data using the
build in short reports completed OK (still with the returns in that record) -
but the same data with a translog file and it went all whoopsi do. Can't really
explain why the 500 odd records went awol though, during the import of the
trans log, and I guess this only confirms why some don't like using variable
length text fields :-)

but at least all is OK again Downunder

Hi Brian - How you been keeping?
Just seen your response - I was nearly at that conclusion myself and then
spotted the problem record - interesting exercise and one to look out for in
the future

Cheers

  Hi Jon,
Thanks for your input, but its halting prior to the start of the tran log
import - see below

Just an update on the problem child database. I have started afresh (3x now)
:-( by re-constructing it by taking a copy of the main database and
re-configuring it. Basically the three databases start out identical and then
the two derivitaves have the 1st 3 panels configured differently for different
usage,(edit order, links etc and the data from the old derivatives is imported
into the new once they are reconfigured.
In the problem DB (ironically the simplest of all 3) the 1st two panels don't
get used at all (no data). After 3 attempts with the same result I have just
carried out a big clean on a copy of the main database in case my DPexp//DPimp
files had a problem. It worked flawlessly. Obviously it doesn't like my
re-config this time on this database for some reason - perhaps a link to
nowhere or something like that that I have overlooked in the re-config.
Although the DB appears to function fine I'm thinking that if I can't complete
TBC there's a "gotcha" lurking in there somewhere. Did notice that with a
successful Big Clean on the other DB that the data files don't re-appear in the
directory until the transaction log import is completed (apart from the
original entry panel) The Please Wait message appears immediately after the
index file is recreated before the transaction log is accessed to start the
import. So if you ignore the "please wait" message and start the import only
the entry panel gets populated by the import and the other panels never appear
in the directory unless you access them from the panel list, but then of course
they remain empty, and you cannot populate them by trying to import the
translog again. So I've screwed up somewhere in the config :-(
  I'll keep a looking.

FWIW, I haven't seen that but try:
    1. scandisk on HDD
    2. dpexp, dpimp on *.str.
    3. check beginning of each panel file for corrupted records with blanks or
something that causes import to freeze, delete them.
You probablly already did this but incase you didn't!
    Best wishes,
    Jon

      Hi All,

Anyone struck this problem or similar with The Big Clean (TBC)?

Dp26x - Three databases - 2 are derivatives of the main one. Have
recently completed TBC (as per Ralph's Book) on the main database and one of
the derivatives without a problem. The 2nd derivative database is not
completing the big clean as follows
      42 panels
Create transaction log - Log looks fine
Delete all data files leaving translog and *str file in directory. Carry
out dpexp/dpimp
Re-enter database and re-create ind & txx files - everything appears fine
till this point, but after those two files are created (both of which appear in
the directory (can be seen in explorer window) the panel entered file is also
created and then a "Please wait" message appears at top of the panel, and the
process comes to a complete stop. No further panel files get created. (Please
wait message stays but there is no CPU or HD activity) With the please wait
message showing (bearing in mind that there is a bug in 26x that allows panel
header messages from other panels to show thru to the top layer panel) you can
move from field to field within that panel. If you exit that panel and enter
the next panel via the panel list then the file, for that new panel entered,
appears to be created and the file appears in the explorer window. You can
exit each panel in turn and enter the next one and each new panel file appears
to be created each time as the panel is entered. But when all files are finally
present, importing the transation log only seems to populate the 1st panel
created after the ind & txx files were created.

This database was & is actually working fine and I can continue working
with it on a backup copy without problems. But just curious why I'm getting
these issues. The Main Database was getting 103 and subsequent 121 errors some
times when editing variable length text fields and TBC sorted it just fine.
Thought I'd do TBC to the couple of derivaties just as a maintenace thing -
neither were having any issues. One also completed fine but as above one has
turned into a problem child - The two databases that completed TBC re-created
all the panel files automatically with the txx and ind files on entering the
database.

      Any ideas??

      Regards

      Colin Roberts
