Hi Ed,

Thanks.  That's what Brian meant when he said to use field forumlas, but it didn't register early this morning when I woke up!  There's always more than one way to skin a cat.

Rick is correct in suggesting you use formulas to populate the child panel fields.  These fields can be real fields (not ::C fields) but define a formula to capture the data field in the parent panel.  In normal single record creation, it should trigger immediately upon creating [F5] to the child panel.  If you are doing multiple records creation and using the “add to total” function, it should also trigger the field formulas as well and populate your child panel.  If not using the “add to total” function, another way to trigger the formula in the child panel fields is to export all data in the child panel and re-import but skip the fields with the formulas on it.

Ed.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the suggestion.  In this case, I need real data, because after bringing the old address through to the Address Management panel, I will be changing the address in the main panel.  As I need to preserve the old address, I don't think this scheme would work.

Thanks again.

Hello Charlie,

It has been a long time since I've seen this one. There is a limit in the amount of data that can be used in the link. If my memory is still good it is in bytes. I believe it is 128 bytes of data. I really would recommend using calculations to bring through data that is not part of the unique key.

Take care,

Rick

Subject: [Dataperf] Panel Link Question

Hi Everybody,

Is there a limit on the number of fields that can be carried from a parent panel to a child panel via a panel link?  Fields 1-6 in the Link Key Field List come through fine, but 7-10 do not.  The index selection matches the first 10 fields exactly, and in order.  There are 12 fields total in the index.

I've been looking through all the documention I have, including Ralph's book, but I can't locate the source of my problem.

Thanks.
