I use VMWare quite a lot, because I am supporting clients software on
various version and Windows and developing on various platforms. I tend to
keep my main machine pretty clean, and run everything as I need as virtual
machines. I have DP running on Windows 95, and Win95 is so fast to load on
modern hardware even when it is virtualised. Don't throw away your old O/S
CDs, or disks, or cassettes for the really old timers, hey don't laugh you
can still get emulators for the old Commodore 64, I am just pi$%ed that I
threw away all my old CBM64 programs.

I do not see a time in the foreseeable future when DOS applications like DP
will not be able to run at all. I think DP will reach its own Armageddon
before the ability to run it does. From memory DP expires somewhere around
2030, when the date functions of DP stop working. It used to be a long way
off. Even if Microsoft killed DOS itself, other virtualisation programs
will kick in to take up the void. In some financial circles DOS programs are
still being maintained as they keep working. In fact recently I was showing
one of my sporting web apps to a club officer who's day job is with IBM,
and when I confessed that the backend was a DOS program he got a wry grin
saying that there is a body of developers in IBM who have a preference for
some backend applications to be run in DOS.

By the way, for some inexplicable reason I worry about Windows 7, having its
own special virtualisation for Win XP, is there an implication that XP will
continue being supported and maintained, or will it be a only for transition
purposes and then have the plug pulled. And if the DOS virtualisation system
has holes in it I can imagine MS's inbuilt XP virtualisation will hide a
labyrinth of tunnels and caves of exploitation potential.

You should also be able to run DP by creating a virtual os - using either of
the popular products out the there - I forget the names VMWare? I know I
have successfully done it in a couple of instances.

Subject: [Dataperf] Does DP2.6x works on a Windows Terminal server 2008 ???

Hello fellow DP users,

In my Dutch accounting firm we will move to a Windows Terminal Server 2008.

The company installing keeps telling me that DP will absolutely not run on
this.

Any help / suggestions / solutions will be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Met vriendelijke groet,

Peter Boekestijn
