As an alternative to running Terminal Server have you given some thought to running it on a Linux Server.
DataPerfect runs very well under DOSEMU on Linux (or probably even DOSBox). You do not get the processor hogging of Windows, and you can fine tune it quite well. Linux servers can be quite modest in terms of power in comparison to Windows servers, and with Open Source software, it makes it a very inexpensive and incredibly reliable solution. You would find that a Linux server running DP, would rarely need a restart, the security will be far better, and life can be far better without the Windows Server, its far more of a set and forget solution. For the remote access you can use VNC Viewers, or another open source technology especially for deployment across slower internet connections is NX. Google has just has recently acquired and made an NX Open Source server available. NX Technology uses far lower bandwidth, as it uses some smart caching algorithms to deliver content in comparison with VNC. You can publish entire desktops, (as you usually do with Terminal Server), or you can publish individual applications (like Citrix), so the application ends up on the user's desktop just like a local application.. Take a look here for more info http://code.google.com/p/neatx/ So you can take your native DP applications and deploly them readily across the net, or a LAN/WAN and once you have done this, and after this is you need it really is just a hop step and a jump to web enabling these applications. So if Microsoft does make life harder, it might actually be a good thing, because moving your apps across to Linux might be the best and least expensive thing you have ever done. Colin, It would seem that the "squeeze" we all anticipated a decade ago is starting to be felt. While I don't run Server 2008 I am very curious as to how and if this can resolve itself. Don P.S. FYI - the young man from NZ is now my son-in-law. We're quite happy for both of them and for the time being at least they're here. 2010/1/24 Colin Roberts <[email protected]> We have been testing using vmware, but as per earlier post this thread - Server 2003 on virtual machine runs fine but Server 2008 hogs CPU so that multiple copies of DP will not run concurrently, and no current version of Tame seems to be able to control the CPU usage with 2008. Anyone actually got multiple copies of DP running on Windows Server 2008 successfully? You should also be able to run DP by creating a virtual os - using either of the popular products out the there - I forget the names VMWare? I know I have successfully done it in a couple of instances. _____ From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Thu, 14 Jan 2010 22:29:03 +0100 Subject: [Dataperf] Does DP2.6x works on a Windows Terminal server 2008 ??? Hello fellow DP users, In my Dutch accounting firm we will move to a Windows Terminal Server 2008. The company installing keeps telling me that DP will absolutely not run on this. Any help / suggestions / solutions will be very welcome. Thanks in advance Met vriendelijke groet, Peter Boekestijn _____ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. Get Windows Live Hotmail Free.
