Hi, Just trying out this new fandangled News Group option and saw this old thread that I should have followed up. We tried out the new version of Tame (ver 6.0) on arrival back in New Zealand and did get Dataperfect running fine on Windows Server 2008 (within a VMware environment) for testing purposes. Tame 5 would not control CPU usage on Server 2008. Very impressed with new Tame ver 6. (But the literature is still years out of date :-( ). Tame 6 does have many new features that are quite useful. Window sizing is now totally consistent and easy (can be done with the mouse wheel). Lookups in Dataperfect are possible by using just the mouse wheel and lots of personal settings are available - fonts, keystroke pace, key repeat speed, copying - saving to clipboard & paste etc are real handy within DP and these are saved automatically to each user's personal documents folder so DP opens the same way each time for each user until you change the settings and then this automatically is saved for next time. Some of this was in ver 5 but I did not have much success with it due to adjustments being somewhat erratic. If you have tried 5 and been disappointed after 4.5, Tame 6.0 is certainly worth a try
Our old NT/Citrix system finally croaked on one Friday afternoon - Harddrive was recoverable and we were backup & running by Sunday. We were considering Linux but with the forced time constraints went with new server box and 2003 (over 2008 due to special pricing) and all is going really well. The latest Tame will allow migration to both Server 2003 and 2008. The good news is Dataperfect still ain't "dead in the water" yet on Windows Server platforms :-) And Terminal services with both even in a remote connection situation no longer need citrix overlay. We have noticed no speed reduction with the new system - hard to tell how much the new multi- processor hardware is contributing to that of course. Actually NT (with citrix) has actually been very goodfor us. The only time we need to reboot is when a backup tape gets stuck in a tape drive and rebooting with your finger on the release button is the only way to release it. But we find increasingly we get left behind - due to NT limitions as time passes. eg can't go past version IE6, and the later Java scripts that the banks are starting to use means we can't access the banks off our system anymore due to IE version, but now have to go direct via the XP client boxes running a later ie version. So far still able to get round things but its starting to get messy and as Don says the writings on the wall. The server box is getting on too. Doubt if you could build a new box that will run NT today. I'm too long in the tooth to start again on the 20 years of dataperfect programming in something else, so in a perfect world we need a OS that will cope with DP and our accounting system (written in Cobal) , but will also allow us to access the internet with all the latest bells and whistles functions. Do you think Linux will enable us to do that? I have a vague recollection that maybe Ralph was using Linux back in 2004 when the conference was on. Once the dust has settled after Xmas hols and we are back into the swing of things, I will get in touch directly, if I may, for any further insights you may have. A quick google of linux produces a large range of Linux versions available. In meantime what would you suggest we look at as a starting point for a linux novice, and which version would you recommend - Debian? seemed a good non-commercial option at the limited time we had a looking Thanks again for your input. As an alternative to running Terminal Server have you given some thought to running it on a Linux Server. DataPerfect runs very well under DOSEMU on Linux (or probably even DOSBox). You do not get the processor hogging of Windows, and you can fine tune it quite well. Linux servers can be quite modest in terms of power in comparison to Windows servers, and with Open Source software, it makes it a very inexpensive and incredibly reliable solution. You would find that a Linux server running DP, would rarely need a restart, the security will be far better, and life can be far better without the Windows Server, its far more of a set and forget solution. For the remote access you can use VNC Viewers, or another open source technology especially for deployment across slower internet connections is NX. Google has just has recently acquired and made an NX Open Source server available. NX Technology uses far lower bandwidth, as it uses some smart caching algorithms to deliver content in comparison with VNC. You can publish entire desktops, (as you usually do with Terminal Server), or you can publish individual applications (like Citrix), so the application ends up on the user's desktop just like a local application.. Take a look here for more info http://code.google.com/p/neatx/ So you can take your native DP applications and deploly them readily across the net, or a LAN/WAN and once you have done this, and after this is you need it really is just a hop step and a jump to web enabling these applications. So if Microsoft does make life harder, it might actually be a good thing, because moving your apps across to Linux might be the best and least expensive thing you have ever done.
