Yes, Windows 7 runs an emulation of Win XP, but I think it is
pretty slow for compatibility will old apps, I have not tried it
myself.

Brian,
I've heard you can run a 'Windows XP Mode' in Windows 7. If that's
available in 64-bit, could you use that, instead?
Joe.

It's true the store machine's (Best Buy, Walmart, etc.) mainly come

a no additional charge option.

One of the issues though is that many machine now only come

I do know that DataPerfect runs without issue in the 32-bit
version of Windows 7 which also has less driver and other
compatibility issues.
Windows 7 64-bit will offer little if any benefit other than to
users of programs like Photoshop, AutoCAD, Premier, etc.
benefiting from more than 4GB of RAM.

The standard version of DOSBox does not support printing or Cut-N-

support, if your application requires it.

Hi Pat,
I will be interested in the answer about the compiler, as I think
it is more than just that, as I think the underlying MS-DOS calls
are no more, and that it will require an emulator.
Just as an alternative suggestion, and although I haven’t tried it,
and I don’t quite have the time at the moment to try it anyway, it
might be possibler and better running DP from a Linux “terminal
server”. DP runs wonderfully under DOSEMU, (and probably DOSBOX) on
Linux 32 bit systems. (I have not tried it on 64 bit so I am not
sure if it has issues too). There are a couple of very nice X-
Server products, that might be useful in particular NEATX and X2GO.
These have a server component so you can “serve” a Linux desktop or
individual applications to a Windows machine via a Windows NXClient
or X2Go client. It’s a little like VNC but the bandwidth usage is
more efficient and you can have printer, and samba passthrough.
From a little work I have done for another client I think DP
application would look like it is running on the local machine and
could even output files to the local file system but DP would be
executing on the Linux box. Other than the hardware all the rest of
the software is free, and the hardware will cost you far less than
for a Windows 7 workstation, perhaps a retiring XP workstation
would make a good DP application server.

Subject: Re: [Dataperf] DataPerfect on Windows 7 64-bit
DataPerfect runs in the 32-bit version of Windows 7 but not in the
increasingly more common 64-bit version. Evoking DataPerfect
in the 64-bit version displays a message "Please contact your
software vendor for a compatible version of this application".
To run DataPerfect on Windows 7:
1) Install the 32-bit version referenced above.
2) As suggested, run DataPerfect under DOSBox, which is a
free open source application available here:
http://www.dosbox.com/
Be aware that you'll loose some of the screen and font size
controls you're likely use to.
3) Download the free virtual XP emulator for Windows 7 available
via a free download from the Microsoft web site. This requires
Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate. It creates a fully
licensed virtual Windows XP Pro SP3 box inside of Windows 7. I
understand this virtual environment runs 32-bit applications but
would love to hear this confirmed from someone who's actually
used it.
FYI ... DataPerfect will also not run in the 64-bit versions of
Windows XP or Windows Vista.
As 64-bit operating use expands (it's the default on most store
computers), this issue is going to get bigger. A question for Lew;
is it possible to do no more than recompile DataPerfect using a
64-bit version of Forth creating a DataPerfect version that will run
natively under 64-bit operating systems?

Hi Tony,
From my initial tests with DataPerfect on a Windows 7 64 bit machine,
it simply won't run; it comes up with an error message about
obtaining a
32 or 64 bit version no matter what is set for compatibility.
I have found a possible freeware solution called DOSBox but won't be
able to test that until Friday afternoon.
If it works, I will let you know.
