Hi, Robert,

I just downloaded and tried with DP26X, and it works fine. Lew must have had
to change something with DP26Y in order to get it to work with the HTML stuff
(or whatever new stuff it was that he added). As you note, DP26Y does seem to
work okay if I convert it to WP4.2, so that is an option, too, if I want to try
to have HTML cake and eat WP51 too, I guess.

The reason I was trying the new version is because I have been having trouble
with DP23 and was hoping to have better luck with the newer version. I have
found the hard way that DP23 has problems restoring from backups over about 1G
and importing transaction logs if they are bigger than about 350MB. If I try to
restore from a backup that is larger than about 1G, it won't restore - it just
tells you that there isn't enough space on the disk to restore, regardless of
how much space there is, even if LESSPACE is running. Fortunately, by accident
I finally found out that if you tell it to restore to a nonexistent directory,
and then tell it to create the directory, you can distract it from the supposed
disk space problem by getting it preoccupied in creating the new directory, and
then it forgets about the disk space problem and proceeds to restore into the
newly created directory.

Also, I found that trying to import a transaction log that is too big will
totally corrupt the database, with happy faces, etc., in the TXX file fields,
the same way that DP used to do in those earlier versions that had a problem
with TXX file corruption. I ended up having to get a text editor that would
handle very large files and split up the transaction log into bite-sized pieces
to get it to import without corruption.. (WordPerfect Editor wouldn't handle
files that large - it just croaked.)

The reason I found all these problems is that I had a bad network server crash
when a power supply died on me while the database was getting written to, and I
had to restore from backups and the transaction log. I was really sweating it
for a while!

Has anyone else every had any problems like this?

Laurie

  Hi Laurie

I have fond memories of Surf City too, the more so since seeing Colin's
photos and videos that I have just received from Don.

I've been importing WP files into DP with 5.1 merge codes for as long as I
can remember and without any problem - I still make extensive use of WP 5.1. I
am using DP 2.6X, but I think it's very unlikely this would have changed with
2.6Y, and am curious that you would be having problems. Meanwhile, you can
always save the WP 5.1 files in WP 4.2 format

Hi Laurie. Still remember "Surf City" and your families' hospitality so
very well. Frankly, I never knew that DP ever did import 5.1 merge files but
then again, it isn't something I would often have thought of doing and it's
been so long since I've used 5.1 I can hardly remember it. Does 2.3 import 5.1?

      Hello, everyone,

I just installed the DP2.6Y to try it again after some years (I have been
using 2.3 all this time), and I think now I remember why I stopped using it all
those years ago. I tried to import some WP51 merge files (with the new{END
FIELD} and {END RECORD} merge codes), and it won't import anything at all.
Strangely, it will import WordPerfect 4.2 merge files, with the old style ^R
and ^E merge codes. Have I done something wrong, or is this a known "feature"
of DP2.6?

      Thanks!

      Laurie
