Dear ALL

I have (of course) met the same problem. In fact, I have used until recently
(and on some PCs still) the 16 bit version of Win7 because it allows DP to run
undre the command prompt. But a few days ago I took the time to install VDOS,
and how simple that was! Long reports may take time, but I was used also to
somewhat sluggishnes under for certain keystrokes. Not so under VDOS: DP works
very fast under VD.

It supports network disks etc., but inside VDOS (as its AUTOEXEC) one has to
redefine ones network disks. This is simple. More or less as the NET commands
under dos itself.

For a mfast and easy transfer of DP to WIN7 and I assume WIN10 I recommend
VDOS. It requires but less than a minute to install and runs just fine.

Says Jens Hoeg using DP since 1988

Good morning Brendan. I wasn't aware that Udo had rebuilt the mailing list, I
know he had it down for a while but glad to see it's back up and working. I
am/was facing the same issues. As you may remember, I work with some
substantially large voter databases. While these are mounted on a basic
peer-peer network, they are generally not used in a network environment, they
are basically used by me for development/import/complex reporting purposes and
at times, by others for simple lookup functions.

The best solution I have found is running Oracle VirtualBox under Win10. I
could have easily have done so under Win7 but don't need to. It's not that hard
to learn how to do it and it's free. In the Virtual Box I'm running WinXP. The
advantage of the VB is that the system runs very fast. The disadvantage is that
the way it relates to directories outside the VirtualBox is slow. So basically
I fire up the VB and use it as a stand-alone computer and pass data back and
forth from the VB by having a shared directory for that purpose. It's working
great.

Another option would be VDOS which you've seen discussed here. The developer,
Jos Shaars, has been working on an upgrade to VDOS that makes it much faster.
VDOS is simply a small program that allows you to run DOS programs like WP & DP
under Win without a lot of overhead. The current version works great and unlike
the VB, isn't a separate entity but a utility. The problem with it was that for
many functions it was very, very slow. Imports, reports and anything else that
required a lot of disc access was significantly slow. I provided him with some
large databases to examine and he's actually figured out a way to speed up the
operation by significant measure but he hasn't yet finished testing it and it
might be a while before it's released. He sent be a beta but I haven't had time
to deal with it - it's election time here in the US. For most purposes, the
current version is great and allows terrific access to the database for lookups
and shorter reports. Now remember, when I import a small data set of voters
it's still a quarter million of them, the larger ones over a million. And
there's lots of calculations going on.

You can find VDOS at VDOS.INFO<http://VDOS.INFO>.

Networking in it's truest sense is a bit beyond my ability to measure. Mark
Nepon was doing pretty well under 32-bit Win10 until he began networking them,
then at last report he was having some problems.

Good to hear from you. Good luck.

Don

Hi all,

Yes I know I’ve been very quiet for a long time on this list, but I’m still
here and I do read all postings.

I’ve recently had to replace my old Win XP system and I now have Win 7. I had
hoped to go straight to Win 10 but this wasn’t possible yet with the
magnification and speech output software I need to use. So I’m now getting my
head around Win 7 and so far nearly everything is working ok.

I’ve just tried running DP and find that Windows says it cannot run this old
application. I think this is something to do with my new system having a 64
bit processor, but that’s just a guess. I also know from other postings on
this list that there should be a way around this problem.

So, any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance for your
thoughts.

Cheers,

Brendan.
