9i has just been certified for Red Hat 7.1. The problem with the 8i installer on RH7.x is due to weird interactions between the bundled JVM and glibc-2.2 in RH7.x. I guess you could get the installer working with the new J2EE 1.3.1 FCS release from Sun, using green threads (this is how I got LimeWire working on RH7.x).
