Yes as does re-reading it.  Really, really lame mistake.  This is always
the way it works for me.  I have a problem.  I ponder and ponder it until
I finally give up and ask for help.  Then I get thinking about it and get
some input that makes me think some more and bang there is the answer 
right in front of me.

Turns out I hadn't quite got all of the query migrated to using 
placeholders.  I was using an undefined variable (called before it was 
populated by another query) when building the query string.  No wonder it 
kept coming up empty.

Thanks for the (virtual) slap up along side the head.
