Wow, that does sound like a lot of bad juju going on.  I hope using
your test case Tim (or someone else who knows more about DBI than me--
which is easy :-) can pinpoint the problem areas and we can squash the
bugs before 5.8.1.  Within a few weeks I'm hoping to put out a Release
Candidate One of sorts for 5.8.1, hopefully you'll be able to test it.
