Actually from my experience it's been the other way around. Better performance from software RAID1 (I'll never use RAID5 again it's not worth the problems) and with hardware RAID you always need a spare controller or be able to get one within a few hours. I have had a few controllers die on me and being able to use off-the-shelf controllers with Software RAID is much easier for me. Plus the software RAID tools are easy to use remotely and are the same no matter what controllers / drive types I'm using.

Add to that these servers are 1U and I don't have any more PCI slots free :(
