So check the postfix logs (/var/log/mail.log or something like that). Perhaps your network setup is broken. You don't want to forward tcp/24 from the internet to your lmtp server. Test to make sure something is talking on tcp/25 by connecting to your *external* ip address using a tool like telnet or netcat. You should see a postfix reply.
