Thanks for the information about telnet. I went ahead and installed telnet and it returned the results below indicating that smtp is listening on port 25 on my system running dbmail.

Connected to leland.smvfp.com (192.168.1.78).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 leland.smvfp.com ESMTP Postfix

I have a firewall via my router. It has port 25 open. The router normally forwards port 25 to 192.168.1.109, which is my normal email server running cyrus, imapd, and stmp. For testing I have the router forward port 25 to 192.168.1.78, which is my desktop computer running dbmail. This is a little inconvenient; because, when port 25 is forwarded to the demail system running on my desktop computer, I lose access to my normal email system. When testing dbmail on my desktop system, I have my outgoing server set to use port 24 for lmtp, which mean I can email between client locally, but I can't email out into the internet, for example to respond to email, etc.

I also have a firewall on my desktop computer, which is running dbmail. I have port 25 open on it, and have just turned it off completely. I also have my iptables firewall shutdown, so I don't think a firewall is blocking access to port 25 anywhere along the line.

I'm going to switch back over to dbmail to run a few test, but I'll get back with everyone later.

Regards,

LelandJ

I think you mis-understand, people are advising you to use telnet to test
connections to a port, not literally to telnet to a telnet server.

SSH isn't a plaintext protocol so should it connect you're not going to see
a reply, telnet or indeed nc will show you if you've connected and return
any info sent back by the mta.

As previously suggest - check your firewall rules

This is my desktop's response when trying to ssh using port 25

Try telnet. And check your firewall.

I don't think FC6 installs with telnet by default, so I would need to install a telnet application, and add a new rules to my desktop firestarter firewall to open up port 23, and I would rather avoid this if possible. I already have ssh installed on my FC6 desktop, and it seems it would give me the same thing as telnet.
