Kris,

I have no idea what could be going on here. Check your database server
is not being shut down, or getting a long lasting write lock on some of
the tables involved.

For someone not into the server side, you did make an effort. What is
missing is the server logs (/var/log/mail.* most likely). They should
contain errors around the time of your downtime.

Until you solve this, consider shutting down incoming email during the
time window involved: better email getting late, than not arriving
intact at all.

Beyond that, please don't be offended by me telling you that this list
is *not* about providing general server maintenance support in case your
admin decides to take a hike.
