Hello Toby,
I've built deal.II 7.1.0 with PETSc, trilinos and p4est. I didn't
include METIS support in the deal.II configure. I noticed that step-17
and step-18 need METIS to run but step-40 went on smoothly. Has anyone
tried to have both METIS and p4est enabled for deal.II ?
BTW, the METIS lib is already built by PETSc and located in the PETSc
library directory.
best regards
Michael

metis-5.0.2 by default creates lib subdirectory when you do make or make
install whereas deal.II seems to check /path/to/metis/Lib (uppercase)

I'm wondering is that was done on purpose or there is any reason to code
it like that?
The current deal.II build works for metis-4.x. Things changed for metis in
5.0; the corresponding changes should be made to the deal.II configure to
take those changes into account. For now, it may be easier to run with
metis 4.
(Is that an issue for the deal.II workshop code jam?)
Best,
Toby
