Ah, now things make sense to me :) I was testing the letters only... Ok, I see. You can try to run echo 1 > /sys/accessibility/speakup/soft/direct to get the same behavior as in the installer. There isn't yet an easy and relatively proper way to make that permanent unfortunately.
