Okay, it is official, the problem lies within the new gcc 2.95.2.  I
compiled a new kernel with gcc 2.7.2.3 and now it's working like a
charm.  Although this may still be a small bug, when I boot the ramdisk
is still mounted ro and I still get the open errors on /dev/tty3.  I
assume the open errors are related to the ro mounted fs.  Anyway,
