reassign 174352 debian-installer close 174352 thanks Having looked at debian-installer a bit, I can conclude that this problem, unsurprisingly, won't occur with debian-installer. Using debconf as the interface mechanism seems like an excellent idea; I can see I'm going to be a lot happier using debian-installer than I have been with boot-floppies.
