On boot it stops and prompts to select appropriate network driver. Using another v.terminal I can see that it detects that it needs the tg3 driver but that it isn't available.
Unfortunately this is a fresh install and my laptop only has a cdrom so I am unable to load in a driver from a floppy. On advice from Martin Michlmayr I used the 2.4 kernel to install the laptop.
