Just tried that but sshd won't start at the moment as two library files are missing (bug report filed: #258956). I was able to copy the missing files and get sshd running. ssh as root does not work because root has no password. After adding a new user in /etc/passwd, I was able to copy a file from my laptop as you described :-) I'll add the procedure I used to the d-i WIKI somewhere.
