Some more information. I have now tried the install with the rc1 netinst cd. I works like a charm with the 2.6 kernel and I now have a fully working workstation machine. The correct modules are loaded and the SATA disk is recognized as a SCSI disk via the libata interface.
With the 2.4 kernel there remain however some problems. The HD is in fact recognized at partition time, but only as hde, i.e. not with libata.
