guillem's [0] list of bugs [1] shows the main problem for the kfreebsd porters. 93 "important" (probably release-critical for kfreebsd) with patches available! 105 bugs with patches not applied. Certainly getting in the archive would give them more time though.
Should porters be required to NMU? I would hope not in this quantity as someone who NMU's should consider themselves a virtual maintainer until the next upload (or at least I've read this a few times from people such as aj?). Simply having etch released is not sufficient motivation for some maintainers. See the age of some of the bugs. Perhaps another candidate might also help solve this wider social problem. Perhaps we can recommend marking bugs as -patch if the patch is no good? Maybe a user tag or some way of having patches marked as needing more review? I think if we did these, we'd still see that good patches aren't being applied but at least we'd be able to help more quickly identify where work is needed. I'm guessing it's due to lack of time for developers which may mean they should be getting a co-maintainer? We may also find the pool of co-maintainers to be low (some packages have). The bus is actually now implemented on Linux target, but not with the CPU I want. kfreebsd has helped packages port to HURD, m68k, mipsel [3]... This should be discussed then. The consensus I've been reading on debian-68k is that emulated buildds produce better code than real hardware.
