xmms is extremely slow when using "Add directory" (aka +DIR) in a
directory with many Vorbis (aka .ogg) files. The reason seems to be that
the Vorbis plug-in manually checks the contents of each and every file
not named ".mp3" to check if it's a Vorbis file or not. While this might
be desirable in theory (like, for Theora bitstreams embedded in Ogg
files, or whatever) it is _extremely_ slow when adding big directories
(10000+ files) from NFS, even with a fast server over 100mbit. Turning
off the check (making it check for the usual ".ogg" extension instead)
makes xmms use three seconds for adding everything instead of literally
hanging for several minutes during add. (Oh, there's huge latencies
with readdir() etc. over NFS, but I have my own caching layer to fix
that :-) ) If nothing else, this should be a configuration option that
can be set by the user.
The MP3 plugin does not do this, and whatever solution gets decided
upon, it should at least be consistent between the Vorbis and MP3
plugins.

The xmms package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/461309 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
