So, is the package mate-notification-daemon installed???

On a side note, the GNOME notification daemon from the package
"notification-daemon" should work as well. In fact, mate-core
has that package as an alternative dependency:

I had such an issue before on Debian wheezy + MATE upstream 1.6 deb packages. I highly recommend pulling in mate-notification-daemon via the meta package and removing the alternative dependency on notification-daemon.

glaubitz@znote-t60l:~$ aptitude why mate-notification-daemon
i   mate-desktop-environment-extra Depends mate-core (= 1.8.0+jessie)

i A mate-core                      Depends mate-notification-daemon (>=
1.7.0) | notification-daemon
glaubitz@znote-t60l:~$

Also: I will file a bug against notification-daemon in Debian and ask for renaming that bin:package. Because:

  o It does not provide notification-daemon support to non-GNOME desktops
o It bears the exact name of the virtual package notification-daemon, but does not provide
    the notification-daemon functionality to other desktop shells.

Greets,
Mike
