The problem here is that someone from the Xfce or LXQt side would have to do work to implement a tray icon, since GNOME-PackageKit uses g-s-d for that and Apper uses kded. I once thought about writing one of these notifiers, but that is no trivial task (and I don't have time to implement it) I would, however, push the old notifier-icon to a Git repo and answer the questions of anyone who wants to work on porting it to make it standalone. I would also package the result and make it available in Debian. So, if someone wants to do this task, please contact me! (C and GTK+ knowledge would be needed) I will probably post this to the Xfce mailinglist. The LXQt people will probably want to write something in Qt sooner or later (or just use kded? who knows...)
