The update-manager-gnome will be removed in Jessie (due to it's bugs), so that is at least no long-term solution. The notifications should work with GNOME-Classic though, if they don't, that is a bug. Did you change settings about that in gpk-prefs (or what are the notification settings there?) Cheers, Matthias
