I didn't argue against the merit of the bug, I just tried to explain that the
fix isn't going to be happening because of the underlaying implementation
details (which are out of the hand of the involved packages).
@Daniel Though a nonfix doesn't make me happy as a user, thank you for the
explanations in any case!
Secondly, your bug report relates to "1.17~pre1-2" which is currently
in experimental, and translations follow unstable, not experimental[1].
@Helge Before reporting to Debian BTS, I updated zutils as much as I can to
ensure that the bug still exists. I could downgrade and re-test, but this would
re-expose an unrelated bug, which is fixed only in 1.17~pre1-1.
Finally, you can always access the English version:
LC_ALL=C man zutils
should give you the original man page.
$ LC_ALL=C man zutils
No manual entry for zutils
You probably mean `LC_ALL=C man zgrep`.
[1] I can explain you the flow from changes in the original man page
to the delivery of the translation into Debian Unstable, if you
want, but maybe off bug …
Feel free if you think this would serve a future contributor who would try to
improve the current situation.
(As for me, these years, I'm unlikely to be able to offer fixes.)
Alma, the only possible way to resolve this is to convince both gzip and zutils
to start maintaining translations themselves. If both agree, then the current
translations from manpages-.. (de, fr, ...) could be move there and this
situation is resolved.
For today, I'm out of words :-), but, perhaps, someone else could step up and
try to convince the folks …
