What font are you using?

The bottom image shows the effect of the autohinter with stems snapped to
pixel boundaries, while the upper image appears unhinted with gray values
around all borders of the glyphs.

As selecting the bytecode interpreter has no effect, it's likely that this font has no bytecode hints.

If you want the glyphs to look like the upper image, select either the bytecode hinter or disable hinting entirely.

I managed to get my fonts working again. It seems that I edited my fonts.conf a long time ago. With the fonts.conf provided by you it works fine.
