MATCH is known to have some issues in 1.8.x and in 1.6.x as well. Please test whether you get the behaviour you expect with the current gnumeric 1.9.x packages in sid. If the problem is still reproducible with the sid packages, or if you are not in a position to test with the sid packages, please provide a complete workbook with which to reproduce this problem.
