I hadn't installed a different icon-theme, but I did now, purged xfe-themes and xfe started within a window and without icons. So I think my former problem must have had something to do with my old personal configuration-files and openbox as window-manager. But I cannot reproduce this. All in all: problems gone, user happy and with a little luck I was the only user who had this problem ;-) I think you should close this bug.
