i think a better solution (and one that has been proposed in the past) would be to have a way of providing dpkg with information about such dynamically created files. this would also be helpful for stuff like logfiles. a fairly straightforward (says he who has not looked at dpkg's source) would be to provide a new file in the control section of the deb which contained a series of globs which could be used to match such files. then, if a query through dpkg -S fails to find an owner of a file it could go through the potentially longer process of searching through these files, reporting all matches. sean
