A debian source package consists of an .orig.tar.gz, a .diff.gz and a .dsc (which describes the source, and references the other two files). It sounds like you may only be downloading the .orig.tar.gz. If you go to <http://packages.debian.org/src:mga-vid> you can download all three, and extract the package with 'dpkg-source -x mga-vid_*.dsc'. (This is just a script that extracts the tar archive and applies the patch).
