Thanks. Very enlightening.

The drive does not like commands GET CONFIGURATION and
READ DISC INFORMATION, but does READ TOC/PMA/ATIP in order
to get a CD-like table-of-content.
It refuses to deliver a Mode Page 5, which would tell its
current write configuration. Plausible as it cannot write.

libburn can handle this quite well, but xorriso as its client
is not satisfied by the lack of information. It cannot
distinguish whether the loaded medium is CD or DVD.

Well, libburn cannot do much more with a DVD-ROM drive
other than inquiring the readable size and reading data.
It would be interesting to know whether this xorriso
run can be performed successfully:

  xorriso -indev /dev/sr0 -check_media --
