I have come across the 2^28 sector limitation which seems to apply to IDE disks https://darnassus.sceen.net/~hurd-web/faq/2_gib_partition_limit/ I had to put all partitions, including the linux partition, within that limit. That page says that the AHCI driver does not have that problem, but I had to set the hard disk in compatibility mode on the BIOS. Things may be different with rumpdisk, so I will let other people comment.
