WindowMaker worked okay with it, but I need KOffice, so I really do need KDE. If I can't downgrade to X3, I'll generate a new log file & post it.

Or even just under fvwm or a lightweight window manager? What window manager are you using? Have a look at the online docs. If you would like a hand, send out the contents of your /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
