Actually, when I brought back X4, I found it was a problem with the xserver-xfree86 configuration. When I specified the correct, neomagic chipset, KDE started working just fine.

Downgrading X will cause you more problems. Since you know that WindowMaker works, you can be assured that debugging KDE will buy you some progress. I use sawfish and still use KOffice - so you might want to try using a different window manager.
