I was aware of that note, and when I last met upstream author Michael Hipp in person, he also mentioned that he intended to finally (L)GPL the whole code. However, I felt that a statement on a website was not sufficient to supercede the license distributed with the code itself. I'm passing this on to debian-legal for further opinions. If there's consensus that this statement is sufficient, I'm more than happy to move mpg123 to main. In any case, the final decision will lie with Debian ftp masters, though.
