Then you may need to do a full install, while making *certain* your installation process (media) includes access to the nonfree repository. Debian is fair at best on wifi due to licensing requirements that prohibit some software from being freely and broadly distributed. Wifi drivers, for the most part, fit that description.
Look for live media that includes "nonfree" in the image name, both Debian and Ubuntu (a Debian derivative).
