For the list - is there a PPPoE client in Debian Live 8? Does one install
if it's installed versus being run in live mode?

Is running PPPoE over wifi even plausible?

I'd propose a gateway server or a router, either one with a PPPoE client,
but that's me...

Probably you misunderstood me. The point is that Debian 8 Live does not
setup DSL connection over Ethernet (PPPoE) if you use desktop environment
graphical tools. On the other hand, Debian 7.4 Live does it well. I talk
about images tested in live mode (without installation on the hard drive).
Tests are done on the same hardware, i.e. it is not an issue with non-free
components. An additional difficulty for me is that I do not have a DSL
connection of this kind in easy access, I have a wi-fi connection
currently. But when my parents try the same live media (8.5 live) they
cannot get Internet working due to the problem with DSL connection.

Then you may need to do a full install, while making *certain* your
installation process (media) includes access to the nonfree repository.
Debian is fair at best on wifi due to licensing requirements that prohibit
some software from being freely and broadly distributed. Wifi drivers, for
the most part, fit that description.

Look for live media that includes "nonfree" in the image name, both Debian
and Ubuntu (a Debian derivative).

Yes, at home I have a modem which shares Internet connection via Wi-Fi.

What is your network media, wifi?

I am able to install it as the only OS, but I have no network connection
provided via DSL. My connection is provided in a different way, which
works. The DSL connection is at my parents’ place and it is physically far
away from me. This is the only connection they have. Currently, they use
Windows as the only installed OS, which is quite old and needs to be
replaced. I want them to change to Debian, since I am also planning to
change from Mint to Debian. I am afraid that after installing Debian from
Live CD they will not be able to setup Internet connection.

Anyway, I am sure about the bug. Few weeks ago I have been on vacation,
where I also had a DSL connection (from a completely different provider). I
had 20-30 free minutes and tried live disks. 8.5 does not connect, while
7.4 is excellent. Unfortunately, I had no time to look for workaround while
I had this connection available.

Are you able to just install it as the only OS?

I tried with Ethernet only.

Not sure if it helps or not, but once I got the following error: "(1)
creating object for path '/org-freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/1'
failed in libnm-glib".

Thanks

Are we doing Ethernet or wifi?

Dear Debian Live Team,
I have a problem with setting up a DSL connection on Debian Live 8 using
tools provided by desktop environment. I tried with versions 8.2, 8.3 and
8.5. The same method works well with Debian Live 7.4. I have already asked
this question in Debian User Forums, but there is no answer for six months.
I am not an expert in Linux OS administration and I am not sure if this bug
belongs to a specific package, version of a system component or just these
live builds. Could you please look at the problem or tell me at least where
to post this bug?
Best regards,
