Then you should confirm your setup. Your service provider's proposed (and supported) configuration would be a modem or modem/router combination that presents the PPPoE login as configured in that modem or modem/router combination. You can then connect multiple devices as a LAN on your side of that equipment.. It also means that your configuration (modem or modem/router combination) doesn't change as the size of the network increases.

You would only choose DSL for your connection type with Live if you need this login presented by your computer. However, that means you have only one device at a time with Internet access, and you are dependent upon the maintenance (and inclusion) of a PPPoE client with each major/minor upgrade of Live, as you the Live boot feature. The Live boot feature is (simply) to see if a particular computer works with the distribution on a trial basis - it's not meant for production use.

Given that you may want to connect cell phones, smart TV's, and the like in the future, I would start thinking about the network getting larger. See the first paragraph.

I think it is better to describe the steps I perform.

1. Connect Ethernet cable comming from your provider to the network card of your PC/Laptop.

2. Start the PC/Laptop with Debian 8.5 Cinnamon Live in the optical drive (or on your USB stick).

3. Boot with the live CD.

4. Select in the main menu "Preferences/Network Connections".

5. In the "Network Connections" window press "Add".

6. In the "Choose a Connection Type" window select "DSL" and press "Create".

7. In the "Editing DSL connection 1" window / tab "DSL" provide your credentials in the "Username" and "Password" fields.

8. In the tab "General" tick "Automatically connect to this network when it is avalable".

9. In the "Device MAC address" combo box in the "Ethernet" tab select your interface (I have only one option).

10. In the "Editing DSL connection 1" window press "Save".

11. In the "Network Connections" window press "Close".

Now the connection is created but does not work, i.e. no Internet access. This seems to behave the same for 8.2 and 8.3. I tested with Cinnamon and XFCE. The same test works well for Debian 7.4 XFCE Live: Internet access is provided.

For the list - is there a PPPoE client in Debian Live 8? Does one install if it's installed versus being run in live mode?

Is running PPPoE over wifi even plausible?

I'd propose a gateway server or a router, either one with a PPPoE client, but that's me...

Probably you misunderstood me. The point is that Debian 8 Live
does not setup DSL connection over Ethernet (PPPoE) if you use
desktop environment graphical tools. On the other hand, Debian 7.4
Live does it well. I talk about images tested in live mode
(without installation on the hard drive). Tests are done on the
same hardware, i.e. it is not an issue with non-free components.
An additional difficulty for me is that I do not have a DSL
connection of this kind in easy access, I have a wi-fi connection
currently. But when my parents try the same live media (8.5 live)
they cannot get Internet working due to the problem with DSL
    connection.

Then you may need to do a full install, while making *certain*
your installation process (media) includes access to the nonfree
repository. Debian is fair at best on wifi due to licensing
requirements that prohibit some software from being freely and
broadly distributed. Wifi drivers, for the most part, fit that
    description.

Look for live media that includes "nonfree" in the image name,
both Debian and Ubuntu (a Debian derivative).

connection is at my parents’ place and it is physically
far away from me. This is the only connection they have.
Currently, they use Windows as the only installed OS,
which is quite old and needs to be replaced. I want them
to change to Debian, since I am also planning to change
from Mint to Debian. I am afraid that after installing
Debian from Live CD they will not be able to setup
            Internet connection.

Anyway, I am sure about the bug. Few weeks ago I have been
on vacation, where I also had a DSL connection (from a
completely different provider). I had 20-30 free minutes
and tried live disks. 8.5 does not connect, while 7.4 is
excellent. Unfortunately, I had no time to look for
workaround while I had this connection available.

environment. I tried with versions 8.2, 8.3 and

7.4. I have already asked this question in Debian
